We spend so much on what we put on our skin and so little thought on what we put in. Yet skin is a living organ, built from what you eat and drink, and after 40 it shows the difference more honestly than it used to. A good smoothie will not replace your moisturizer or your sunscreen, and I would never pretend a glass of berries erases a wrinkle. But the right ingredients, day after day, genuinely support skin from the inside, and it is one of the most enjoyable habits you can keep. Let me share what actually helps and three simple recipes I come back to.
What your skin actually wants from food
You do not need anything exotic. Skin thrives on a handful of simple things, and smoothies are a lovely way to get several at once:
- Water-rich produce to support everyday hydration alongside your topical routine. Cucumber, melon, berries, leafy greens.
- Antioxidants to support skin through everyday environmental stress. Berries, dark leafy greens, cacao, green tea.
- Vitamin C, which the body uses to make its own collagen. Citrus, kiwi, strawberries, mango.
- Healthy fats that keep skin supple and help it hold moisture. Avocado, chia, flax, a little nut butter.
- Protein, the raw material skin is built from. Greek yogurt, kefir, a scoop of clean protein or collagen.
- Gut-friendly foods, because a balanced routine can support a calmer-looking complexion. Kefir, yogurt, a little fiber.
Notice how much overlaps with what we use on the outside, vitamin C and antioxidants in particular. It is the same logic as my guide to the best ingredients for mature skin, just taken inward.
An honest word about collagen
Collagen powders are everywhere and the marketing is enormous, so let me be balanced. Some people do feel their skin looks a little plumper and more hydrated with regular collagen, and the early research is cautiously encouraging. But it is a supplement, not a miracle, the effect is gradual and subtle, and a good diet plus daily sun protection does far more heavy lifting. If you enjoy it and it fits your budget, a scoop in a smoothie is a pleasant way to take it. If you would rather get there through food and vitamin C, that works too. No guilt either way.
Three beauty smoothies to start with
Each makes one generous glass. Blend, taste, adjust, and drink soon after blending for the freshest texture. These are simplified favorites; you will find many more on the smoothies page and across my Healthy Drinks videos.
The Berry Antioxidant Glow
For antioxidant support and a fresh-looking glow
1 cup mixed berries, 1 small banana, 1 small handful spinach, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, and 3/4 cup water or kefir to blend. Add more liquid if needed for a drinkable texture. Berries and greens bring antioxidant-rich color; chia adds healthy fats. Add an optional scoop of collagen if it suits your routine.
The Green Hydrator
For a hydrated, fresh-looking feel
1/2 cucumber, 1/2 green apple, 1 small handful spinach, a squeeze of lemon or 1 kiwi for vitamin C, plus 3/4 to 1 cup cold water with ice. Blend until thin and drinkable. Light, fresh and lovely for warm days and tired-looking skin.
The Creamy Collagen Builder
For suppleness and a satisfying breakfast
1/4 avocado, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt or kefir, 1/2 cup mango or strawberries for vitamin C, 1 tablespoon ground flax, and 1/4 to 1/2 cup water if needed. Add a little honey only if you like. Creamy, filling, and rich in fats and protein your body uses for skin structure.
The everyday habits that magnify it
Drinking enough plain water through the day matters as much as any single ingredient. So does sleep, which is when skin repairs, and easing back on very sugary, heavily processed food, which tends to show on the face after 40 faster than before. And of course, none of this replaces what you do on the outside, your gentle routine and daily sun protection are still doing the bulk of the work. In summer especially, hydrating drinks pair beautifully with the summer skincare routine.
A note before you stock up
Food is supportive, not medicine. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, managing diabetes or another health condition, or thinking about regular supplements like collagen, spirulina or others, have a quick word with your doctor first, especially if you take medication. Skin that suddenly changes, breaks out or reacts is worth a professional's eyes rather than a new powder.
Smoothie boosters worth keeping in the cupboard
Optional add-ins for beauty smoothies. Choose simple, well-reviewed products and check with your doctor before regular supplements.
